Do I need to rewire my home for smart automation?+
No. Shelly relays are designed to retrofit into your existing wall boxes, sitting behind your current switch plates. Your existing switches still work manually too — nothing changes about how your home looks or operates, it just gains remote control capability.
What can I control with Shelly smart automation?+
Almost anything connected to your home's electrical circuits — lights and dimmers, heating and towel rails, garage doors, curtains and blinds, bathroom fans, irrigation, hot water cylinders, security lights, outdoor lighting and general appliances. If it switches on and off electrically, Shelly can usually control it.
Does it work with Google Home and Alexa?+
Yes. Shelly Gen 3 and Gen 4 devices are natively compatible with Google Home, Amazon Alexa, Apple HomeKit (Gen 4), Home Assistant, SmartThings and Matter. You can use voice commands, the Shelly app, or any of these platforms to control your devices.
Do I need an electrician to install Shelly relays?+
Yes — in New Zealand, any work inside your switchboard or wall wiring must be done by a licensed electrician. Shelly devices connect directly into your home's 230V wiring. We install them safely and issue the necessary electrical compliance documentation.
Can I add smart home to a rental property?+
Yes. Because Shelly installs behind existing switches without changing them visually, it's minimally invasive. Many landlords use Shelly to automate heating schedules for tenants. We recommend checking your tenancy agreement and discussing with your property manager beforehand.
How long does a smart home installation take?+
Most residential installs are completed in a single visit. A simple setup — a few light circuits and a garage door — typically takes 2–3 hours. Larger whole-home setups with multiple circuits may take a full day. We'll give you a clear time estimate with your quote.
What is the Shelly app and how does it work?+
The Shelly Cloud app (free, iOS and Android) lets you control all your Shelly devices from anywhere. You can create scenes — like "Goodnight" which turns off all lights and locks the garage — set schedules, monitor energy usage and get notifications. We set the app up and walk you through it as part of every install.
